Cleveland's School Playground MakeoversA church in Cleveland holds "Urban Hope" programs that immerses surburbanites in the neighborhood and with some service activities. Urban Hope Kentucky School Garden ProjectAcross the street from Kentucky Elem. School is a large Community Garden, holding 135 plots, each about 20 by 20 feet. Urban Hope volunteers work cooperatively with the teachers to help neighborhood children plant and tend to gardens, learn about plant gowth, and ultimately take their produce home. Volunteers helped to build and paint picnic tables for the site. Kentucky School Indoor Recess ProjectAn organizer helped to make activity boxes for the children to use indoors, when the weather keeps them away from outside recess. The school's budget constraints purchases of anything non-academic. The project involved obtaining 22 large plastic covered boxes, filling them with donated games, toys puzzles, paper, crayons, markers and more -- one for every classroom. Used games and puzzles were donated. Kentucky BlacktopA group of people painted lines on blacktop behind the school. This proveded a place for the children to play hopscotch, four-square and such during recess. They also painted parking spaces for teachers so cars will not block the section of the blacktop where students are supposed to play. |
